I'm working on an application where we would like to distribute
content to members on a cd or dvd, and mix it into pages that are
served over https.

I (rather naiively) looked at using file:// urls (check out
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84128 sometime, it's
absolutely shameful that five years later there is still no indication
that file:// urls don't work in FireFox.)

I'm thinking now that the pages should be distributed on cd, and use
ajax to pull in the remote content. But before I try this seemingly
backwards approach, does anyone here have any experience with this
type of content delivery?
